    Villa Gallia Como

Villa Gallia is one of the most significant examples of 17th century architecture on Lake Como, rich in history and charm. It stands on a historic site in the heart of the Borgo Vico, where in the 16th century the first Renaissance villa in Como was built, commissioned by the famous humanist and bishop of Como Paolo Giovio.

Unlike other stately homes of the time, Giovio's villa, known as "The Museum", was conceived not only as a holiday resort, but also as an exhibition space to house his precious artistic collection, including a series of portraits of illustrious people. This intended use inspired its name: "The Museum", a tribute to the Muse of the arts.

Built between the 1537 and 1543 with light and temporary materials, "The Museum" quickly deteriorated. In 1615, the abbot Mark Gallio, nephew of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, demolished the old structure and built a new villa, Villa Gallia, in a more solid and compact style, moving back from the shore to ensure greater stability and safety.

    Architectural Features of Villa Gallia

The new villa, which still today bears the name of Villa Gallia, features an imposing central structure characterised by a large frescoed hall which extends across both floors of the building. The frescoes, attributed to Isidore Bianchi and, perhaps, even to Recchi brothers, represent allegorical and mythological scenes, reflecting the taste and aesthetics of the Lombard Baroque.

Around the main hall, several smaller rooms develop symmetrically, designed to welcome guests and for the daily activities of the Gallio family.

The two facades of the villa are enriched by tripartite lodges, which were originally open to the lake and the garden upstream, allowing natural light to illuminate the interiors and offering magnificent panoramic views. Today, these loggias are closed with glass, but retain their original charm and character.

    The Garden of Villa Gallia

The garden of Villa Gallia it develops towards the mountain, crossed by an avenue that culminates in a 17th century nymphaeum, an artificial cave decorated with shells, mosaics and statues, typical of the aristocratic residences of the time. This historic garden is still visible beyond Via Borgovico, even though today it is incorporated into a school complex.

    Modern History of Villa Gallia

In 1957, the villa was purchased by the Province of Como, who transformed it into a representative and office building, alongside the nearby Villa La Rotonda. Since, Villa Gallia It has been used to host institutional events, conferences, and other cultural events, becoming an important point of reference for the local community and visitors.
