Path of the Wayfarer: from Abbadia Lariana to Lierna
General informations
- Starting point: small church of San Martino – Abbadia Lariana (LC)
- Length: approximately 10.5 kilometers
- Difference in altitude: approximately +390 metres
- Duration: approximately 3 and a half hours
The route starts near the small church of S. Martino, 400 m from the Abbadia Lariana train station, at the foot of the Grigne. In fact, from here you can find the orange signs of the Sentiero del Viandante .
This part of the path is quite simple and crosses the villages of Borbino and Robianico ( fractions of Abbadia Lariana ), passing between old farmhouses, olive groves and meadows enjoying a beautiful view of Abbadia Lariana.
The path runs parallel to the lake at an altitude of around 230m until you begin to glimpse the promontory where Mandello del Lario .
Following a beautiful paved road you go up until you reach the Romanesque church of S. Giorgio in the municipality of Mandello del Lario, the first obligatory stop of this stage.
The church, dating back to the 13th century, contains within it a wonderful cycle of 15th century frescoes and is perched on a spur of rock.
Outside there is a small churchyard from which it is possible to admire a splendid panorama of the lake.

What to see in this stage
- Abbadia Lariana with the spinning mill complex and the Monti spinning mill (now home to the Silk Museum);
- church of S.Giorgio in Mandello del Lario;
- Castello district in the Maggiana hamlet of Mandello del Lario with the Maggiana tower;
- S.Abbondio district in the Rongio hamlet of Mandello del Lario;
- Cenghen waterfalls (614 m), "the little jewel of the Grigna": you can't find them along the path but if you have time to make a detour we advise you not to miss them. An hour's journey, approximately 2km and 340m of altitude difference following a simple mule track among olive trees and fruit trees which offers wonderful views of Lake Como and a truly idyllic final refreshing swim;
